T. H. Chivers (NY, NY) to Poe (NY, NY). Cited in Poe to T. H. Chivers, June - July ? 1845 (CL-547b). Chivers’ letter seems not to be CL-556. The inclusive dates, not necessarily accurate, are based on fragments in the Chivers Papers (CSmH, HM 24238 and others). (Formerly, CL-547a and CL-547b were combined as CL-547a.) (CL48-547a.)
[June - July?]
Poe (NY, NY) to T. H. Chivers (NY, NY). Chase & Parks, pp. 37–38 (where it is dated as 15 Aug. 1845). The Poe letter seems to have been composed by Chivers from memory. Miss. M. Fuller (NY, NY) to Poe (NY, NY). Phillips, 2:1166-1167; see also L [1974], p. 526-527. TOM interpreted the “X” as Fuller's “famous asterisk.” Not in Margaret Fuller's hand, but possibly by an amanuensis to keep Fuller's incognito consistent with the “X”-signature of the letter. Poe, however, docketed the letter “Miss Fuller.” Still, R. N. Hudspeth, “A Calendar of the Letters of Margaret Fuller,” SAR 1977, ed. J. Myerson (Boston: Twayne, 1978), p. 135, omits the letter. MS not at MB; thus unlocated. (CL41-473; CL48-555; CL66-555; CL74-555.)
Aug. 10
T. H. Chivers (Philadelphia, PA) to Poe (NY, NY). Cited in T. H. Chivers to Poe, 9 Sept. 1845 (CL-564). The date of the letter is fixed by an entry on Poe's “Memoranda” of the subscribers and contributors to his Penn/Stylus Mag. On this list, Poe writes the comment: “When I write to Chivers, ask him what are the names in his letter of Aug. 10.45.” Chivers’ letter apparently contained the names of six potential subscribers, whose names on Poe's list are bracketed, with the note: “see Chivers Aug. 10/45.” This item was previously dated as “before Aug. 11.” (CL41-477; CL48-556 and CL48-[561a].)

Poe (NY, NY) to B. B. Minor (Richmond, VA) Cited in L. Minor to J. Bisco, Aug. 23, 1845 (RF-10): “Mr. Poe wrote me that you had paid him $10. for contributions to the Messenger. You did right in that instance. But hereafter, please pay no money to anyone for me, without my order. The arrangement I contemplated making with Mr. Poe was never consummated. His engagements with the B. Journal prevented his giving his attention to the Messenger, without making the two works too similar in their critical departments, for separate publications.” No direct printing or MS of Poe's letter is known. The $10 to which Minor refers is probably documented by the second of four receipts Poe signed to J. Bisco, a receipt dated April 7, 1845, included with Minor's letter in a 1941 auction. (CL08-561a.)

A. M. Ide (South Attleboro, MA) to Poe (NY, NY) (as editor). Cited in BJ (30 Aug. 1845) 2:126: “We are somewhat at a loss to comprehend A. M. J. [sic] of Attleboro’. To what previous poems does he allude? We thank him cordially for his last favor. It shall appear forthwith. The rhythmical information desired is unattainable in book form. See meanwhile one of the three numbers (we believe the third) of ‘The Pioneer’ published at Boston by Mr. Lowell.” Since the contents of A. M. Ide, Jr. to J. Bisco, 13 Aug. 1845 (RF-9) seem not to fit the editorial inquiry of the BJ, this is presumably a different letter. The article referred to on “rhythmical information” is Poe's “Notes Upon English Verse,” Pioneer (March 1843). Ide probably sent his poem “The Village Street,” which appeared not directly in the next, but as the first item in the following issue, 13 Sept. 1845, 2:145. (CL08-563a.)

Poe (Fordham, NY) to the editor of the Weekly Universe or Sunday Dispatch (NY, NY). Cited in G. W. Eveleth to Poe, 3 July 1849 (CL-807a). Regrettably, no file of this obscure periodical is known to have survived for this period. Since Eveleth mis-attributed several items to Poe, and Poe had no opportunity to reply to this letter, we cannot be certain that Poe actually wrote the article in question. If it was indeed by Poe, it was probably similar to what Poe wrote to C. F. Hoffman, 20 Sept. 1848. (CL08-723a.)

Mrs. Richmond, according to documents which accompany the letter, gave the MS to the father of Mrs. E. S. Worcester, of Boston. This gentleman was a reporter for the Boston Transcript. [ca. Jan. 21, although dated Jan. 25]
Poe (Fordham, NY) to Mrs. S. H. Whitman (Providence, RI). Ingram 2:185-186, and H [Works], 17:323 (following Ingram), merely excerpts the transcript that Mrs. Richmond made of the original for Ingram. Quinn is also selective, pp. 586-587; W [1909], 2:292-293 (excerpt); Phillips, 2:1362-1364 (excerpts); L [1948], 2:420-422, from Mrs. Richmond's transcript, now at ViU (Ingram, item 55); L [1966], 2:723, cited. This is the letter cited in Poe to Mrs. A. L. Richmond, ca. 21 Jan. 1848 (CL-768). Only an eight-line MS-fragment, at InU (Lilly), appears to be extant. D. Randall (1964) prints a truncated version of the fragment, p. 40. In Sept. 1930, the Poe-Whitman Collection cost Mr. J. K Lilly $50,000. Randall, following a note by Mrs. Whitman's (“Fragments of a letter received from Edgar Poe in the beginning of January 1849”) dates the letter as “early January” [March 1960] p. 49, item 24. (LTR48-302 // CL41-664; CL48-769, CL48-761b, CL48-769c and CL48-770a; CL08-769.)

This letter, often dated as Sept. 1849, is the letter cited in Poe to Mrs. M. Clemm, 10 Sept. 1849 (CL-823). MS-fragment at MB (Griswold). (LTR48-330 // CL41-711; CL48-821, CL48-[821b] and CL48-[827a].)
ca. Aug. (?)
Poe (Richmond, VA) to Miss S. A. Talley (Richmond, VA). In 1878, Mrs. Weiss (formerly Miss Talley) recalled that Poe, having felt unwell for several days, “... sent a message by his sister [Rosalie Poe] requesting some flowers, in return for which came a dainty note of thanks, written in a tremulous hand” (Scribner's Mag., March 1878, 25:712, col. 1). (CL08-821a.)
ca. Aug. (?)
Poe (Richmond, VA) to Miss S. A. Talley (Richmond, VA). A second letter, also established in 1878 by Mrs. Weiss, along with CL-821a: “He again wrote, inclosing a little anonymous poem which he had found in some newspaper and admired ...” (CL08-821b.)
[Sept. 10] Monday evening

A clipping of the NY Herald at ViU (Ingram, item 918). MS at NNPM (MA 325, purchased in 1906). SH $160 (1905). (LTR48-331 // CL41-712; CL48-822.)
Sept. 10
Poe (Hygenia Hotel, Old Point Comfort, VA) to Mrs. M. Clemm (Fordham, NY). This is the letter cited in Mrs. M. Clemm to Mrs. Richmond, 15 Sept. 1849 (RF-18). What is probably the close of this letter, a 1 by 3.5 inches clipped signature, is noted in ABC from a sale in UK, 12 Nov. 1985, item 974, sold for ?1,300 (see ABC 1986, p. 164). Along with CL-719c, Mrs. Clemm apparently sent this MS to Sarah E. Robins, from whom it passed to Elizabeth Robins. The letter was discovered in 1985 by Frank Walker, curator of the NYU library. MS at NNYU-F (Robins); MS of close and signature is unlocated. (LTR08-331a // CL41-713; CL48-823.)
before Sept. 18
Mrs. M. Clemm (NY, NY) to Poe (Richmond, VA) (two letters). Cited in Poe to Mrs. M. Clemm, 18 Sept. 1849 (CL-826). (CL41-714; CL48-824 and CL48-[823a].)

Mrs. S. A. Lewis (NY, NY) to Poe (Richmond, VA). Cited in Poe to Mrs. M. Clemm, 18 Sept. 1849 (CL-826). (CL41-715; CL48-825 and CL48-[828e].)
Sept. 18, Tuesday
Poe (Richmond, VA) to Mrs. M. Clemm (NY, NY). Nineteenth Century (Feb. 1852), 5:31 (one paragraph); (W [1885], pp. 339-340; H [Works], 17:366-367; W [1909], 2:333-335; Phillips, 2:1476-1477; Quinn, pp. 632-633; Quinn & Hart pp. 24-25 (F); L [1948], 2:461-462; L [1948], 2:506 (facing) (F of portion by Poe). MS (part in Poe's hand, part in transcript by Mrs. M. Clemm) at MdBE (Amelia F. Poe); transcript by A. F. Poe at ViU (Ingram, item 63). (LTR48-332 // CL41-716; CL48-826 and CL48-825a.)
[Sept. 18]
Poe (Richmond, VA) to Mrs. S. A. Lewis (NY, NY). Quinn, p. 633; L [1948], 2:462; L [1948], 2:507 (facing) (F). MS at TxU-Hu (formerly in the collection of Wm. H. Koester). (LTR48-333 // CL41-717; CL48-827 and CL48-826a.)

Poe (Richmond, VA) to Mrs. M. St. Leon Loud (Philadelphia, PA). Am. Lit. (March 1963), 35:80-81; L [1966], 2:727-728. MS at ViRP. (LTR66-334 // CL66-827a.)
after Sept. 18
Mrs. M. St. Leon Loud (Philadelphia, PA) to Poe (Richmond, VA). Though no evidence of a letter from Mrs. Loud exists, one could easily be inferred from Poe since he was to receive $100 for editing her poems and in his letter (CL-827a) Poe asked for a reply “by return of mail.” (CL81-827b.)
before Sept. 22
Poe (Richmond, VA) to Mrs. M. Clemm (NY, NY). Implied by a statement left by Mrs. S. H. Whitman, Century Mag. (Jan. 1909), 77:451, and in a letter from Mrs. S. H. Whitman to J. H. Ingram, 12 Oct. 1875 (RF-26). The date is established by Mrs. E. Shelton to Mrs. M. Clemm, 22 Sept. 1849 (RF-19). This letter is cited speculatively by The Poe Log, pp. 839-840, based on the claim that Mrs. Shelton had accepted Poe's proposal, but may actually be a misrepresentation of CL-823 or CL-826. (CL08-827c.)
Sept. 26
Poe (Richmond, VA) to Miss S. A. Talley (Richmond, VA). Cited by Mrs. S. A. Weiss (formerly Miss Talley) who, in 1878, recalled: “On the way [to visit a sick friend] I was met by Miss Poe [Rosalie], who delivered a note left for me by her brother, containing a MS copy of ‘Annie,’ – a poem then almost unknown, and which I had expressed a wish to see” (Scribner's Mag., March 1878, 15:714). In his notes about versions of the poem “For Annie,” TOM [Poems] says that the manuscript of the poem, and presumably the note with it, “was destroyed during the Civil War” (1:456). (CL08-827d.)
before Sept. 29
Mrs. M. Clemm (NY, NY) to Poe (Philadelphia, PA) (addressing Poe as “E. S. T. Grey”). Implied by Poe to Mrs. M. Clemm, before 22 Sept. 1849 (CL-827c), and confirmed by a list of letters left in the Philadelphia Post Office as printed in the Philadelphia Public Ledger (Oct. 3 and 4, 1849). (CL08-827e.)
ca. Sept
Poe (Richmond, VA) to Mrs. S. E. Shelton (Richmond, VA). According to Mrs. S. A. Weiss, “... I well remember that during his [Poe's] absence Mrs. Shelton one day came to see Mrs. Mackenzie, with whom she had no previous acquaintance, and had a private talk with her in the parlor ... about Mr. Poe's letters to her” (Independent, August 25, 1904, p. 445). (CL08-827f.)

Note: Entries CL-831 - CL-870 appear on Poe's “Memoranda” list of subscribers and contributors to his projected magazine the Penn, later the Stylus. The full list was printed by Alexander G. Rose III and Jeffrey A. Savoye, eds., Such Friends as These: Edgar Allan Poe's List of Subscribers and Contributors to His Dream Magazine (Baltimore: The Enoch Pratt Free Library and the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore, 1986). All of these entries carry the comment, “See let” or “See letter.” In most cases, it is reasonable to surmise a reply by Poe. Regrettably, it is not practical, in general, to date these letters more precisely than 1840-1848. Those letters which can be dated more accurately have been added to the appropriate places in the check list.
