This engraved portrait was first printed in The Knickerbocker Gallery: A Testimonial to the Editor of the Knickerbocker Magazine from its Contributors (New York: Samuel Hueston, 1855). It is based on a painting by Miner Kilbourne Kellogg (1814-1889).
38. James Russell Lowell in 1845
Courtesy of the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore
This daguerreotype of Lowell was taken in Philadelphia at the studio of William and Frederick Langenheim about May of 1845. The sitting of Lowell (and his wife Maria) is documented by a letter of May 12, 1845 to Lowell's sister-in-law, in which he describes both likenesses as “excellent.”
