21. John P. Kennedy, ca. 1850

This engraving of Kennedy was taken from a daguerreotype by Julian Vannerson (ca. 1829 - ca. 1880), presumably made while Kennedy was Secretary of the Navy, under Millard Fillmore. Originally from Richmond, Vannerson moved with his employer, Jesse Harrison Whitehurst, to Washington, DC in 1849 and opened his own gallery in 1855. The engraving first appeared in Putnam's Monthly in 1854, and was widely circulated thereafter.

This engraving of Willis, which appeared in The Knickerbocker Gallery (New York, 1855, p. 431), was taken from a painting by Charles Loring Elliot (1812-1868), a talented and prolific artist who is said to have created over 700 portraits.
