FOREWORD

————

The subject of this dissertation was suggested by Professor Patrick J. Lennox, Litt. D., Head of the Department of English.

It was, of course, necessary to assemble an extensive bibliography of Poe; but only that small portion of it which has bearing upon the matter of this dissertation has been incorporated in the bibliography presented.

I here wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to Professor Lennox, who was my major professor, and who furnished me able direction and offered much valuable criticism. I am sincerely grateful to him. Likewise, I wish to extend my deep gratitude to Professor Paul Gleis, Ph. D., and to Associate Professor Leo Behrendt, Ph. D., of the Department of German, both of whom were very generous to me with their knowledge and time. Their collaboration and encouragement were of invaluable assistance to me in the preparation of this work. Also I acknowledge gratefully the kind interest of Professor Joseph Dunn, Ph. D., of the Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures, who offered me valuable assistance in bibliographical research.
