RCL-555

Miss. M. Fuller (NY, NY) to Poe (NY, NY). Phillips, 2:1166-1167; see also L [1974], p. 526-527. TOM interpreted the “X” as Fuller's “famous asterisk.” Not in Margaret Fuller's hand, but possibly by an amanuensis to keep Fuller's incognito consistent with the “X”-signature of the letter. Poe, however, docketed the letter “Miss Fuller.” Still, R. N. Hudspeth, “A Calendar of the Letters of Margaret Fuller,” SAR 1977, ed. J. Myerson (Boston: Twayne, 1978), p. 135, omits the letter. MS not at MB; thus unlocated. (RCL41-473; RCL48-555; RCL66-555; RCL74-555.)

RCL-556

T. H. Chivers (Philadelphia, PA) to Poe (NY, NY). Cited in T. H. Chivers to Poe, 9 September 1845 (RCL-564). The date of the letter is fixed by an entry on Poe's “Memoranda” of the subscribers and contributors to his Penn/Stylus Magazine. On this list, Poe writes the comment: “When I write to Chivers, ask him what are the names in his letter of August 10.45.” Chivers' letter apparently contained the names of six potential subscribers, whose names on Poe's list are bracketed, with the note: “see Chivers August 10/45.” This item was previously dated as “before August 11.” (RCL41-477; RCL48-556 and CL48-[561a].)

RCL-561a

Poe (NY, NY) to B. B. Minor (Richmond, VA) Cited in L. Minor to J. Bisco, August 23, 1845 (RF-10): “Mr. Poe wrote me that you had paid him $10. for contributions to the Messenger. You did right in that instance. But hereafter, please pay no money to anyone for me, without my order. The arrangement I contemplated making with Mr. Poe was never consummated. His engagements with the B. Journal prevented his giving his attention to the Messenger, without making the two works too similar in their critical departments, for separate publications.” No direct printing or MS of Poe's letter is known. The $10 to which Minor refers is probably documented by the second of four receipts Poe signed to J. Bisco, a receipt dated April 7, 1845, included with Minor's letter in a 1941 auction. A. M. Ide (South Attleboro, MA) to Poe (NY, NY) (as editor). Cited in BJ (30 August 1845) 2:126: “We are somewhat at a loss to comprehend A. M. J. [sic] of Attleboro'. To what previous poems does he allude? We thank him cordially for his last favor. It shall appear forthwith. The rhythmical information desired is unattainable in book form. See meanwhile one of the three numbers (we believe the third) of 'The Pioneer' published at Boston by Mr. Lowell.” Since the contents of A. M. Ide, Jr. to J. Bisco, 13 August 1845 (RF-9) seem not to fit the editorial inquiry of the BJ, this is presumably a different letter. The article referred to on “rhythmical information” is Poe's “Notes Upon English Verse,” Pioneer (March 1843). Ide probably sent his poem “The Village Street,” which appeared not directly in the next, but as the first item in the following issue, 13 September 1845, 2:145. (RCL08-563a.)

Whitty and Ostrom state that the MS is at ViRVal, but that institution claims no record of the letter. CL41 gives the MS as at ViRP, which also disavows ownership. The envelope was apparently separated from the letter and sold with some other MS, probably the fragments of “Marginalia” M-253-255, from an Am. Art Assoc. sale (Austin), 23 April 1917, item 586, as noted in ABC (1917), p. 1032. (This letter is probably the item noted in the sales catalog of Charles De F. Burns, NY, of March 1882, item 421, where it is dated only as 1846 and described as a 1 page, 4 to. ALS “Relative to analysis and solution of a cryptograph.” It is probably also the same letter as noted in the Sullivan Brothers & Libbie sale (M. M. Jones, of Utica NY), March 22-24, 1881, item 959, with Jones having mostly likely obtained it directly from Percival.) SH $115 (1917, envelope only, with another MS). Notes:

The present Check List is a revision and an expansion of Ostrom's A Check List of Letters to and from Poe (published as No. 4 in the Bibliographical Series sponsored by the Alderman Library of the University of Virginia, 1941) and subsequent editions (1948, 1966, 1974, and 1981). As a result of considerable study and analysis of Poe's correspondence and various other resources, the original list has been essentially eclipsed, and even the revised versions have now been supplanted. (The present Check List was originally developed as a web-based version of Ostrom's 1981 “Revised Check List,” with numerous corrections made by Jeffrey A. Savoye. That corrected and improved Check List was incorporated in the 2008 edition of The Collected Letters of Edgar Allan Poe.) A number of entries from newspaper lists of letters left unclaimed have been provided to the Poe Society by Ton Fafianie. Additional corrections to the present Check List are solicited, and may be provided through the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore.
